Chapter Fourteen

Bailey had left everything that legally belonged to him to his son, Jamie, according to the document. However, until the boy was eighteen, the estate would be managed by Dylan.

Bailey couldn’t have ignored Dylan's inheritance from their parents, so Dylan finally got his share of that.

“It appears Dylan had a strong motive after all,” I said, startling Sheriff King.

“What are you…” He hesitated, took a deep breath, then mumbled, “I don’t even know why I bother.”

“And it makes Lynn look like less of a suspect,” I said.

Sheriff King nodded. “That’s exactly why I’ve been asking you to stay away from Dylan,” he said. “You don’t know if he was the one who killed his brother. If he thinks you’re getting too close, he could…”

“Wait a minute,” I interrupted. “I think I heard something strange.” Sheriff King stood silently, glancing around for anything that could have made an unusual noise.

“What did you hear?” he whispered after a few moments.

“It was really strange,” I said. “I seem to have heard you say you were asking me to stay away from Dylan, not demanding I stay away.” The vein, which I’d begun to think of as the “Kelly vein” in the sheriff’s neck, started pulsing again.

“You know what I mean,” he snapped.

Going through the house, we found some other information. Bailey’s businesses were bankrupt. He had gone through all the money from his parents’ and his uncle’s businesses. The building for the property development showrooms was empty. As far as the construction company went, there were no houses or other buildings being built. There were no tools. There was no money. There was nothing but a lawsuit being filed by employees and other contractors who had not been paid. Dylan had nothing to manage for his nephew. He had nothing to inherit. And if he knew about the state of the businesses before Bailey’s murder, Dylan had nothing to kill for. The big question, then, was when Dylan knew the businesses were insolvent and there was no money.

I really hoped it wasn’t Dylan. Although I had zero romantic interest in the man, I liked him, and I was a little sad that he’d had such a rough time in life. I hoped he could get the help he needed, get his life back on track, get Princess back, and give her the kind of life she deserved.

When we left Bailey’s house, Sheriff King asked if I knew where Dylan might have gone.

“The first time I talked with him, he said his wife went to South Dakota to spend some time with her family,” I replied. “Dylan’s neighbor seemed to think that’s where he went.” The sheriff gave me a quizzical look.

“You’re interviewing his neighbors now?” he asked.

I rolled my eyes. “He happened to be outside watering his lawn while I was there,” I said. “We were just having a neighborly conversation.” He looked at me with the type of expression a poker player might have when his opponent is bluffing.

“It’s true,” I protested.
